When it comes to urban charm, Travel + Leisure readers just can’t get enough of Mexico. San Miguel de Allende, which has been at the top of our list for the last two years, may have been taken off the list this time – it is now in second place-but it is still met with great admiration. One reader called it ” a unique art community in the mountains, with a mix of rich history and amazing food.”Another Fan of the city praised the architectural diversity:” beautiful, magnificent modern interiors are mixed with 500-year-old facades. You never know what joy you will find behind one of the beautifully carved doors. “Oaxaca (no. 5), another city with a long and complex history and colorful buildings, raves about its great food scene, and their cooking schools. Mexico City has risen in our table-last year’s number 11 is now number 4: “one of the most exciting cities in North America,” wrote one reader. “I go at least once a year and every time it’s a new and exciting experience.”Another voter added:” the Restaurants were excellent, from the corner taverns to the upscale places.”

Of course, Mexico does not steal the Show completely. Our readers love a variety of cities, and for various reasons. Chiang Mai received awards – and third place – for its elephant sanctuary and shopping, which offers a wealth of “incredible crafts at good prices”. From Michelangelo’s David to Ponte Vecchio, Florence (No. 9) is always popular. “Being able to walk through the whole city is a dream for travelers,” wrote one voter. Another gave a tip: “If you look in any direction at sunset, the city will be bathed in a light so ethereal that your breath will be taken away.”And in the USA, Charleston No. 12 in South Carolina offers “Southern Charm at its best”.
